The role of governance in realising the transition towards sustainable societies
2016
It is widely known that governance is central to the successful implementation of sustainable development policies and measures. Yet, there is a paucity of research which explore the links between governance and sustainability. This paper attempts to address this research need by providing an analysis of the role of governance in enabling - and to some extent - fostering a transition towards sustainable societies. A set of indicators for assessing the capacity for and willingness and commitment to transition to a more sustainable society is presented, enabling identification of direction of change. This paper presents the results of a study, in the context of which sustainability governance…

Derecho de acceso a la información : el desafío de una sociedad guiada por la transparencia en el ordenamiento jurídico español
2021
This study will address the two aspects of rights linked to information, the right to information and the right to information, to end with the formulation of some conclusions that, distancing themselves from a mere summary, seek to encourage doctrinal and political debate on assumptions that, being peacefully settled, should be reformulated in light of the repeated crisis of transparency. For this, it will be articulated by addressing, first, the most significant aspects of the right to information and its link with the right to freedom of expression, as well as the new challenges that these rights face in the digital age, to then analyze the right to information, its regulation in the Spa…
BOARD GOVERNANCE: DOES OWNERSHIP MATTER?
2019
Good governance is crucial to achieving an organization's mission. Nevertheless, little is known about how the structure of governance is influenced by the nonprofit (NPO) or for‐profit ownership (FPO) structure of an organization, partly because they tend to be active in different sectors. In this paper we overcome this challenge by using data from a global sample of 392 microfinance institutions. The results show that the average NPO has a larger board, more female directors, and a higher number of board meetings than the average FPO. Moreover, where there are larger boards and more frequent board meetings, this has a positive effect on the financial performance of NPOs. It is thus confir…
Compliance with the rules and partnerships engagement as determinants of good governance: an analysis of the experiences of local development in Italy
2012

Collective agency and the concept of ‘public’ in public involvement: A practice-oriented analysis
2016
Background Public involvement activities are promoted as measures for ensuring good governance in challenging fields, such as biomedical research and innovation. Proponents of public involvement activities include individual researchers as well as non-governmental and governmental organizations. However, the concept of ‘public’ in public involvement deserves more attention by researchers because it is not purely theoretical: it has important practical functions in the guidance, evaluation and translation of public involvement activities. Discussion This article focuses on collective agency as one property a public as a small group of participants in a public involvement activity could exhib…
Local support for conservation is associated with perceptions of good governance, social impacts, and ecological effectiveness
2019
Local support is important for the longevity of conservation initiatives. The literature suggests that perceptions of ecological effectiveness, social impacts, and good governance will influence levels of local support for conservation. This paper examines these relationships using data from a survey of small-scale fishermen in 11 marine protected areas from six countries in the Mediterranean Sea. The survey queried small-scale fishermen regarding perceptions and support for conservation. We constructed composite scores for three categories of perceptions-ecological effectiveness, social impacts, and good governance-and tested the relationship with levels of support using ordinal regression…
